Effectiveness of art therapy for kids

What happens in art therapy?

In art therapy, the images represent thoughts and emotions. The image modulates between the subconscious mind and the conscious, portraying past, present, and future aspects of the individual who created it. In short  the image serves as a link between the inner and outer worlds.

Through the process of making an image, the client forms an image or pattern of what appears inexpressible or indescribable. Art therapy is an expressive art therapy whereby people get to confront their hidden fears and issues. People with depression who are physically fit can be cured using sound therapies, but people having physical ailments along with depression or other mental health problems cannot be cured. Expressive art therapies are used as art therapies for depression, anxiety, and children with disabilities and have been proven to change and affect the lives of people a great deal.

Powerful Art Therapy for Kids: Acitivity

A practical session on art therapy was taken for kids in the age group of 5 years. The results and the response were good. The kids were asked to draw a picture or any shape when they feel angry and irritated. Below are the beautiful illustrations by kids.

The second question was to make a picture of a shape they think looks like happiness.

Here in above two sheets, you can notice happiness for them means rainbow, butterfly, happy little bugs and friends around. Every kid is special in its own way. But their happiness is almost same. Kids tried to use almost every color to define their happiness.

But when asked to express their anger on one sheet the kid used only 3 colors in which black color eyebrows could be noticed. When asked to explain the sheet 1, the kid explained ” This girl is standing with teeth hold tight and eyes out and which means she do uptight anger.” Uptight anger means the kid is tense and nervous. However, The other sheet contains one color to make a sad face with eyes down and scribbled on it multiple times. The kids don’t like the situation feels neglected and offended and leaves the place, quitting everything.

To change their anger they were asked to see themselves doing the anger. Both kids felt bad to see the faces and as compared to enjoying in park and with happy faces and crown on their head. They realized the value of a smile and enjoying in their happy garden. They were also asked that why there are two kids, to which, therefore, they said one is me and the other is my friend. The one friend is always there to share their happiness. So, friends are important.

The kids were guided as you look different in sheets, so as you have different likings and disliking, but to become a good friend with other share and care is the way.

In this way, when it becomes difficult for kids to explain their emotions, art therapy is a blessing to which kids respond and understand in a positive way.

My next blog is similar to this blog i.e. On Color therapy because art and color therapy works closely, but color therapy has therapeutic effects on the various mental and physical conditions of the body. In color therapy, colored inks and colored lights are also used to treat various health conditions.
